Change your Furnace Filter for Clean Air and Efficiency

Furnace filters are an essential part of your furnace that need to changed periodically. Filters help clean the air circulating throughout your home to reduce common allergy triggers like smoke, dust, pollen, pet dander, mold and mildew. They also protect the blower fan on your furnace from the same dust and other particles.

To keep your furnace operating properly and to maintain your home’s indoor air quality, it’s a good idea to put in a new filter on a regular basis.

Replacing your filter is an easy DIY project that doesn’t take much time, but it helps to know some of the most common types of filters that we have available.

Types of Furnace Filters

  • Fiberglass filters: Provide maximum airflow, but are not the most effective for filtering dust and debris. Inexpensive.
  • Pleated filters: They filter most allergens, dust and particles, including spores and mites. Pleated filters come with different ratings and last about 90 days.
  • Washable filters: Constructed with either an aluminum or plastic frame. Attracts particles using self-charging fibers. Washable. Can last more than 5 years.

Good to Know
Ensure your filter fits properly so that air doesn’t blow around it and release dirt and dust into the air. Also, consider the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) shown on the filter. MERV ratings range from 1 to 16. The higher the number—the more efficient the filter. However, you should consult the owner’s manual for your furnace so that you know which filters work best for your system.
